New Year, New You (and me too!) Part 1

Happy New Year!

It's that time again! Time to make personal goals to improve ourselves and our lives.  This year, I am striving to obtain more work/play balance, to be healthier, more active, more creative, and to feel more confident (and less critical!) In this series, I want to share with you my new finds that will help you feel beautiful, healthy and creative.

First up- revamping the beauty routine!  As I am aging, I am finding my skin and hair to be getting drier and drier. I'm seeing age spots and wrinkles, and finally learning to love to the hair, skin and body the good Lord gave me.  I'm no longer wishing for what I don't have, but taking steps to play up my assets and conceal the flaws.  Here's what I'm working on:

#1: Erase Under Eye Circles

This could be one of the best makeup tricks I have ever seen!  Check out Elle's featured video by Kandee the Makeup Artist to learn this brilliant technique for applying under eye concealer.  I purchased the Hard Candy "Nobody's Perfect" Concealer Palette at Walmart and have been thrilled with the results!

#2: Enhance The Eyes

Have you ever tried liquid eyeliner? It's not as hard as you might think! Apply your eye shadow, then line your upper eyelid with a pencil liner along the lash line.  Now you have a guide to apply liquid liner! Using a coordinating color of liquid liner, start in the middle of your lid and trace the pencil line to the outside of your eyelid, then finish the line from the inner corner of your eyelid to the center. I have been happy with e.l.f. Liquid Eyeliner (also available at Target), and at $1 a tube, it isn't a big investment!

Finish with a coat of mascara.  The New Year is a great time to replace your mascara, and I love "The Falsies" by Maybelline.  Apply liner and mascara to your top lid and lashes only to keep your eyes looking fresh and bright.

#3: Sleek and Shiny Hair

Hydration is critical to have healthy, shiny locks, and I finally found an affordable line that does the trick.  The Brazilian Keratin Therapy collection by Organix is brilliant!  First, it smells like a coconut dream, which is perfect for the New Year winter blahs.  Second, it is sulfate free, so it is safe and gentle for color-treated hair.  Third, it contains keratin, coconut oil, avocado oil and cocoa butter to smooth your hair and add shine.  The flat iron spray works wonderfully to protect your hair from the harsh heat of the iron- goodbye smoking strands!

Avoid washing your hair every day to allow your hair's natural oils to penetrate your tresses.  For that second-day style, I cannot say enough about John Frieda's Volume Refresher Dry Shampoo. Simply spray onto roots and around your forehead and temples, to add volume and freshness to your hair.

#4: Beautiful Skin and Nails

Living at high-altitude in Denver means low humidity, which means patchy dry skin and craggy cuticles are constant foes. Who knew a cheap baby product would be the key to soft, smooth, itch-free skin?  A lovely lady that works with my mom shared this tip with her, and I am thrilled!  While you are still damp after your shower, apply Johnson's Baby Oil Gel to your skin.  This is the vault of moisture- it locks it into your skin until the next day!

As an artist, my hands take a constant beating.  They are forced to bend and twist wire, mold and shape clay, and mix and paint color.  Manicures are a waste of time! Nail polish chips within minutes and looks terrible.  I had acrylic nails when I had an office job, but those thick, fake nails won't allow me do do the fine detailed work that creating art requires. Enter CND Shellac.  My mom treated me to a Shellac Manicure at our local nail salon for my birthday, and my nails still look awesome! That was the beginning of December!  I am hooked.  It feels awesome to have hands and nails that look presentable, and I will feel much better about my hands appearing in tutorials every now and again.

#5: Positive Self-Affirmation

Most importantly, be kind to the person you see in the mirror.  You don't realize how many negative things you say to yourself in a day.  Stop picking apart every imperfection and tell yourself "I am Beautiful", because you are!

Stay tuned for more of my New Year's Goals....and a very HAPPY 2012 To YOU!

  1. i threw away all my make up 16 years ago and never looked back...though i wouldn't mind being on "What Not to Wear" (as long as i can wear flat shoes) so go figure!
but i absolutely will try #5! i think this is a great way to be, though we seldom are that kind to ourselves.
thanx for the affirmation reminder, Erin!
